Third Reading on the Tax Bill concludes

The House today continued the deliberation on the taxation schedules of the Tax Bill of Bhutan 2022 and on the  Committee’s recommendations.

The House, through a majority show of hands, supported the Committee’s recommendation to increase the Sales Tax rate on cement. For the rest of the items i.e plastics, gold and silver, heavy machine rides, and wood and metal furniture, the House endorsed the revised tax rates submitted by the government.

After extensive deliberation, the House also unanimously supported the Government’s proposal on levying Green Tax on the selective machineries that have emissions.

Additionally, the Committee also submitted an in-depth report on the import of mobile phones from June 2021 to June 2022 and recommended the imposition of taxes on them. The recommendation was based on the huge surge in the import of mobile phones into the country taking advantage of the existing zero tax rate and pointed out the possibility of deflection. The House would include in the recommendation.

The Bill will be put to the vote tomorrow.
