
European Union Ambassadors calls on to the Hon’ble Speaker and met with the Parliamentary Committees-DZ
Today, a 17 members high level delegation from the European Union (EU) led by the EU Ambassador Mr. Ugo Astuto called on the Hon’ble Speaker. The delegation comprised of Ambassadors and Ambassador designates from Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia and Sweden, Charge d’Affaires from Greece and Poland and High Commissioner from Malta and EU officials.
The Hon’ble Speaker welcomed the delegation and expressed immense gratitude to the EU for the developmental support provided to Bhutan under their Multi-annual Indicative Programme . The Speaker also thanked the EU for the financial support to the Parliament of Bhutan which was implemented through the INTER Pares - a Parliament in Partnership initiative and the on-going project ‘Nyamdrel’. The Speaker also expressed his gratitude to the Belgian and Danish Parliaments for hosting the Bhutanese Parliamentary delegation during their visit to Europe in March 2023.
EU Ambassador H.E Mr. Ugo Astuto on behalf of the delegation expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and expressed their gratitude to Bhutan in supporting Europe's interests.
Various issues concerning civil society, upcoming elections, women’s participation in Parliament, youth engagement, partnership in renewable energy, and engagement of citizens in the political process were discussed.
The delegation also made a courtesy call on the Leader of the Opposition, Hon’ble Dorji Wangdi. The delegation also met the Members of the Human Rights and Foreign Relations Committee and Women, Children and Youth Committee separately.
Diplomatic relations between Bhutan and the EU were established in August 1985. Since then the EU has become an important development partner for Bhutan. Of the 27 EU members, Bhutan has diplomatic relations with 13 member states.
