
Workshop to strengthen Parliamentary Strengthen Budget Scrutiny
A five-day workshop to strengthen parliamentary budget scrutiny is being held at the Namgay Heritage Hotel in Thimphu from March 31 to April 4, 2025.
Speaking at the opening, Tshogpon Lungten Dorji emphasized the role of Parliament in ensuring “transparency, accountability, and the efficient allocation of public resources.” The Chairperson of the National Council, Thridzin Sangay Dorji highlighted the importance of gender-responsive budgeting. Both the Presiding Officers emphasized the crucial role of effective budget oversight in promoting accountability and good governance in Bhutan.
Ms. Lenna Rikkila Tamang, Director for Asia and the Pacific of the International IDEA, also joined the opening of the workshop virtually and expressed her hope for the workshop’s success.
On the first day, the Finance Ministry, led by the Finance Secretary, presented an overview of the budgetary process, followed by an interactive question-and-answer session, allowing members to actively participate in the discussion.
The workshop will be facilitated by two Committee Experts, Ms. Shennia Spillane, Committee Secretary, and Dr. Ashley Clements, Inquiry Secretary from the Australian Federal Parliament, and is organized by International IDEA, funded by the European Union.
