Women, Children, and Youth Committee Engages with PEMA Secretariat and RENEW on Key Social Issues

On August 27, 2024, the Women, Children, and Youth Committee convened a meeting with the PEMA Secretariat and Respect, Educate, Nurture, and Empower Women (RENEW) at Ga-Kyid Khangzang, National Assembly. The meeting focused on clarifying roles and functions and reviewing the progress of initiatives aimed at addressing critical social issues.

The presentation highlighted several pressing issues, including mental well-being, sexual assault, teenage pregnancy, and domestic and gender-based violence, as well as the roles and functions of the National Commission for Women and Children (NCWC). The discussion aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of these challenges and assess the effectiveness of current measures in place.

Committee members stressed the importance of grassroots interventions and prevention, such as advocacy at the gewog level through local leaders like Gups and Mangmis. They also suggested that relevant organizations and civil society organizations (CSOs) collaborate with Members of Parliament to act as direct advocates on these issues. The Committee invited written submissions of any additional concerns or issues not covered in the meeting for further deliberation.
