The Environment and Climate Change Committee holds consultation meeting with Thimphu Thromde
The Environment and Climate Change Committee held a consultation meeting with Thimphu Thromde on October 14 at the Ga-Kyid Khangzang. The meeting was primarily conducted to address the urgent need for proper market spaces for wholesaler farmers and street hawkers, as highlighted during the post-plenary session on August 30, 2024.
As the largest market area serving farmers from the 20 Dzongkhags, Thimphu Thromde plays a crucial role in facilitating access to markets. The discussions emphasized the importance of establishing designated marketplaces that support local farmers, street hawkers and promote sustainable practices.
Officials from Thimphu Thromde provided an overview of their mandates, focusing on maintaining a clean environment and assisting these groups. While they acknowledged their ongoing support, they highlighted that the cleanliness of the market space, lack of spaces, policy and legislative clarity as well as coordination among stakeholders remains a significant challenge.
In conclusion, the Committee directed Thimphu Thromde to submit the proposals on:
(1) addressing the current issues of providing adequate and convenient spaces and timing for wholesaler farmers and street hawkers, and
(2) Strategies including policy, legislative and stakeholders coordination interventions for finding long-term solutions that would enable conducive and sustainable market access for farmers from all 20 dzongkhags.
