The Environment and Climate Change Committee holds consultation meeting with Department of Trade, Department of Revenue and Customs and Vehicle Dealers

On 11 October 2024, the Environment and Climate Change Committee (ECCC) held a consultation meeting with the Department of Trade, Department of Revenue and Customs, and vehicle dealers at the Lhen-Zom Khanzang, National Assembly of Bhutan  to discuss  the recent hike in vehicle prices, which has raised widespread public concern.

During the meeting, public concerns on restriction to purchase vehicles directly from foreign countries, high tax on vehicle import and its impact on prices were highlighted among other factors such policy, legislation, market monopoly, advance payment and delivery period, customer services, pros and cons of vehicle dealerships, methods of levying taxes, need to enhancing public trust through transparency and advocacy.

The meeting concluded with a call for ongoing dialogue to stabilize vehicle prices and ensure fair access and services for consumers.  The committee will submit its findings including recommendations to the Plenary for further decision.
