Speaker and Leader of the Opposition Join the 42nd Session of the World Teen Parliament (WTP) on the Global Youth Voting Debate
The Hon’ble Speaker of the National Assembly, Lungten Dorji, and the Hon’ble Leader of the Opposition, Dasho Pema Chewang, participated virtually as international jury members at the 42nd World Teen Parliament (WTP) Session held on 15 May 2025. The session brought together young voices from across the globe to debate on the theme: “Voter Turnout Bonus – Should 18 to 25 Year Olds Receive Tax Rebates for Voting in National Elections?”
Addressing the teen parliamentarians, the Hon’ble Speaker said, “Lead with empathy, build bridges, act with purpose—true leadership begins with understanding others. It’s not about your title, but about the impact you make.” He encouraged the youth to champion compassion, long-term thinking, and integrity in their leadership journeys.
Echoing the sentiment, the Hon’ble Leader of the Opposition remarked, “It’s an honour to be part of this historic event. Bhutan, as a young democracy, stands as a testament to collaboration between the government and the opposition for the greater good. Teenagers today are the voice of justice, inclusion, and change. Champion local changes and stay connected to your communities.”
The Bhutanese dignitaries joined jury members from India and Zimbabwe in evaluating the debates, where 16 out of 100 elected Teen MPs presented strong arguments both for and against the motion. The jury awarded Anesh Gulaty as Best Speaker (against the motion), while Aashi Guptha won the popular vote. Two Bhutanese teen parliament members Kinley Yangden and Tshering Wangmo from Gaselo Higher Secondary School also joined the forum.
The World Teen Parliament is a global, elected platform empowering teenagers to lead and create change. WTP is a free, non-profit initiative supported by UNESCO-MGIEP and Save the Children, engaging over 500,000 teens and leaders from 25+ countries.
