
Members of the Parliament holds Round Table Meeting with UNFPA Asia-Pacific Regional Director Mr. Pio Smith
Led by the Chairperson of the National Council, the Members of Parliament held a roundtable meeting with Ms. Andrea M. Wojnar, Country Director of UNFPA Bhutan, and Mr. Pio Smith, UNFPA Asia-Pacific Regional Director (United Nations Population Fund) today. The meeting was held to discuss UNFPA’s role in advancing the rights of women and girls, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and population development in Bhutan, as well as contributing to an enabling environment for their well-being.
Members from parliamentary committees engaged in discussions, sharing insights on the legislative measures taken by the Parliament in alignment in advocating public awareness on gender equality, domestic violence, sexual and reproductive rights, and human rights. The parliament will continue working to promote gender equality and empower marginalized communities.
The meeting emphasized the importance of creating an enabling environment for the well-being of women and girls, highlighting the commitment of all attendees to prioritize gender rights in Bhutan. The meeting ended with a commitment to further cooperation. The Regional Director reaffirmed UNFPA’s dedication to ensuring that women and youth can access sexual and reproductive health services, live free from gender-based violence, and benefit from rights-based policies.
