Adoption of Motion on the Government to Table Education Bill
On 17 June, 2024, the Member from South-Thimphu submitted
a motion for the Government to table the Education Bill. Following the
deliberations, the House directed the Ministry of Education and Skills
Development to submit the draft National Education Policy to the Members to
ensure informed decision making.
Today, the Member from South-Thimphu reiterated that the motion to table the Education Bill was submitted to prevent the politicization of education and to improve its quality and standard.
The Member submitted that, after reviewing the draft education policy and after having conducted further research, a revised motion was submitted directing the Ministry of Education and Skills Development to implement the policy as envisioned by His Majesty the King and to come up with appropriate measures to keep education out of political game.
The Minister for Education and Skills Development informed the House that the draft education policy was developed after in-depth research. The Minister informed that the Ministry also plans to further consult with teachers and schools across the country regarding the policy. The Minister also assured that any arising issues will be addressed, and while the policy will be implemented for now, drafting an Education Bill may be considered in the future if necessary.
The House endorsed the Motion with all the 45 members present and voting, voting in favor of the Motion.
