4 October 2024: The Economic and Finance Committee holds consultation with Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MoIT)
On the invitation of the Economic and Finance Committee, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MoIT) team presented a study report on the feasibility of airstrip construction. The Lhengye Zhungtshog (LZ) instructed MoIT to conduct detailed onsite feasibility assessments on May 2024, at six sites: Samrang in Samdrupjongkhar, Yoesltse in Samtse, Pongchela and Yangbari in Mongar, Danaga (Patala) in Trashigang, and Zhemgang (Buli). This presentation is part of a broader initiative to enhance the country's air transport infrastructure, crucial for economic development and connectivity.
During the consultation, the committee reviewed findings from recent feasibility studies at multiple potential airstrip locations, with key discussions focusing on financial implications, including budget allocations, funding sources, and the expected economic benefits of improved air transport facilities. The committee underscored the importance of aligning financial strategies with MoIT's infrastructure development goals to ensure the viability and sustainability of airstrip projects.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to ongoing collaboration between the Economic and Finance Committee and MoIT, aiming to advance the feasibility studies and expedite the development of airstrips that will significantly contribute to Bhutan's economic growth and accessibility.
